I’m Ishmael Daro (pronounced DARE-oh). I’m a Canadian journalist based in New York.
I’m currently the Digital Editor for Democracy Now! overseeing the show’s website and social media operations.
From 2015 to 2018, I worked for BuzzFeed News in Toronto, first as a general news reporter covering Canada and later as part of the debunking team led by Craig Silverman. My writing focuses on how propaganda, misinformation, and conspiracy theories spread online, with a specific focus on far-right politics and Islamophobia.
Before that, I worked for the National Post/Postmedia Network for two years doing a mix of breaking news coverage, blogging, and videos for Canada’s largest newspaper chain.
My work has appeared in Slate, Vice, The Nation, CBC Radio, and elsewhere.
I co-hosted a weekly news and culture podcast called Safe Space, published by TorStar, publisher of the Toronto Star and StarMetro newspapers. We did three seasons of the show, and you can listen to old episodes on Soundcloud.
I was born in Afghanistan, but I grew up in the Canadian prairies. I studied political science at the University of Saskatchewan before moving to Toronto to pursue a career in journalism. I’m an avid cyclist and sci-fi fan.
